How to keep motivated and stay on track

March 18, 2018

Struggling to stay motivated in pursuit of your goals? It happens to everyone at some point. We can't stay motivated 100% of the time, all of the time. But you can implement the following steps to make sure you stay focused working towards your goals, get your motivation back and ensure long term success.

1. Act with intent.

Have a plan of action and take the necessary steps to implement that plan. For example, write down your goals, write down what you need to do to get there (eat more healthily, exercise more etc) and then plan what you will do when unforeseen circumstances come up, such as being held up at work. Lets take that example. If you're planning on doing going to the gym after work but you have to work late and don't have time, will you just do nothing? Potentially getting you out of your exercise programme? Or, say to yourself you will do a quick interval routine at home instead? Plan ahead, this is key!

2. Find what motivates you

There will be times when you will need will power and you'll need to force yourself to exercise, but make it as easier for yourself as possible. If you don't fancy going to the gym today, that's fine, what other activity could you do instead that you will enjoy? Trampolining? Swimming? Going for a bike ride? Find things that you will enjoy but will also keep you fit and active and achieving your health and fitness goals will be a lot easier.

3. Keep it simple!

Too many people make the mistake of creating complicated and overwhelming routines and programmes that can't be sustained so you'll end up quiting and really unmotivated. Keep it simple! Start off with a simple exercise routine that you can easily stick to. Maybe start with just a couple of walks a week and then slowly start building up from there. Dop't try and do everything at once.

4. Stop the negative self talk

What you tell yourself has a profound impact on your reality. Tell yourself you can't do something, you won't! Tell yourself you can, you will! So quit the negative self talk. You're harder on yourself than anyone else in your life but it's time to change the way you think. If you slipped up and had a slice of pizza or some cake, don't think to yourself 'I'm fat, I'm a failure, I'm never going to achieve my goals' just acknowledge the fact that you may have gone off course today but you'll be back on it tomorrow. Living this way will allow you to be a lot happier and successful.
